Catskill Puppet Theater

Since 1979, John Potocnik and Carol Mandigo, co-founders of the Catskill Puppet Theater, have been touring internationally, enchanting young and old with their delightful musical productions! Combining backgrounds in art, music, drama and American folk culture they are one of the nation's finest touring companies, receiving accolades from such premiere venues as the Calgary, Winnepeg and Ottawa International Children's Festivals, The New England Puppetry and Family Theater Series, the New York State Museum's Kid's Series and hundreds more schools, libraries, fairs and festivals.

Able to set up indoors or out, the Catskill Puppet Theater shines equally on a big stage or a festival lawn. Their full sets, colorful scenery and large, beautiful puppets transform even the simplest environment into a fantasy world rich with wonder and excitement!

The Catskill Puppet Theater takes great pride in carrying on in the living tradition of the old traveling puppet troupes, bringing high quality children's theater to over 75,000 people each year.

HIAWATHA

Using full sets, exquisitely crafted puppets and accompanied by Native American flute and drum, this enchanting play is based on the life of the great Iroquois hero, Hiawatha.

Hiawatha is portrayed as a curious young boy who decides to disobey his grandmother and seek a vision, alone, in the forest. There he finds a sacred cave and enters a magical world full of talking animals and fantastic spirits! He meets a wise Mohawk, The Peacemaker, who teaches him a wonderful lesson. At last, with the help of his friends, Bear and Turtle, Hiawatha discovers the pathway he must follow to become a great man!

THE VILLAIN'S MOUSTACHE

This lively show is a traditional old-time melodrama featuring colorful 2 1/2 foot tall rod puppets with animated mouths, eyes and eyebrows! The audience never fails to get involved, whether booing the wise-cracking villain or shouting advice to the poor distraught heroine, Little Nell. Other characters include Moe, a ragtime piano player, Jenny, a showgirl with a heart of gold and Curley, a kindly hobo.

The Villain's Moustache is a musical and the puppets harmonize on many original tunes as well as a few old-time tin pan alley show tunes. The play is fast paced and exciting enough to hold the attention of even the youngest children but contains enough real drama and good music to grab the adults in the audience as well!

THE WILLOW GIRL

When a young Chinese girl immigrates to the American frontier, she finds herself facing discrimination in a swirl of other immigrants and cultures. But she possesses special gift. She has been taught the healing power of plants and has a secret in the mysterious spirit who inhabits a beautiful Willow Tree.

When the Willow Girl meets two Irish brothers, one generous and good, the other selfish and unkind, they all discover that the magic of The Willow works two ways.

This rod puppet show features a large, gracefully animated Willow Tree and is a wonderful blend of humor, mystery, drama and magical effects. It is illustrated with original and traditional fiddle music.

IVAN AND THE ICEWOLF

This is the story of a lovable Russian peasant who is always wishing for things he doesn't have. Baba Yaga sends him on a quest to the North to find his wishes and he is guided across the Siberian Ice fields by a magic wolf. Little does Ivan know, but the Ice wolf has been put under a spell and only under the shimmering lights of the Aurora can she transform into her true shape... The beautiful daughter of Tsar Nikolas Of The North!

This musical show is based on Russian folklore, and features large rod puppets and lots of beautiful scenic and lighting effects.

The story is enchanting and teaches the lesson that those who wish for wealth may already be rich in ways they don't realize.

SISTER RAIN and BROTHER SUN

This musical nature-tale features lots of audience participation and Brother Sun, a huge, talking sun face seven feet in diameter with movable mouth and eyes! The story is acted out by large animated rod puppets with finely chiseled features and colorful sets and costumes. Some of the players are Mother Nature, a grizzled old wise-woman covered with vines, Farmer McGreedy, a crafty old hillbilly, Little Bear and the beautiful, glistening Sister Rain! When Sister Rain becomes jealous of Brother Sun and stops watering the earth, Mother Nature and the audience must join forces to save the day.

This show also includes plenty of lively original music! It's great fun for adults and older folks as well as children!
